“I think you are aiming too high, you might want to consider a few more safety schools.”

The icy tone from the MBA admissions consultant made my heart sink. Was the fact that I was an international student with no US work experience the issue? Was it because I worked in public policy, which was not a traditional pre-MBA path? Was I just not worthy enough?

What kept me going–despite the discouraging message–were two factors: my inner champion as well as my external cheerleaders.

As my own inner champion, I made sure that I had a crystal-clear understanding of why I wanted to go to business school. I wrote pages and pages of notes on my own life story so that I could connect the dots on how my unconventional path led me to business school. I researched possible schools, networked with alumni, and thought hard about how to translate my public policy experience into something that the adcoms would value.

My external cheerleaders, my coach and friends, were crucial to my success. They gave me clear, honest, and precise feedback that I could act on. The first drafts of my essays, unpolished and raw, were transformed with their advice. They heard my voice more clearly than I did myself, and helped me amplify it. They gave me confidence by believing in me, even when my inner champion faltered.

I eventually got into my dream school, MIT Sloan, and also landed my dream job as a consultant at Bain. I coach because I hope to help others of a similar background (international, non-traditional applicants) get to where I am today. I want to guide others in their quest to find their inner champion, and also to be one of their external cheerleaders, as they start on their MBA admissions or consulting recruiting journey.

And that’s why I coach.

Want to work with me on anything regarding consulting recruiting or MBA applications? Head to my profile and message me to get started. I’d love to help you reach your goals!

Hi! 👋🏼 I'm Jenny, currently MBA'23 in MIT Sloan. Prior to MIT, I was working in the government, doing international diplomacy as well as policymaking work. With my MBA education, I managed to successfully pivot from a very non-traditional background to into the private sector. I have done internships in several areas, including: - being a Summer Associate with Bain, working on 2 consumer products projects - a strategy project with SAP, one of the largest enterprise software companies - a Product Management internship with Perch Energy, a Series A energy consumer start-up - working on a start-up idea with Prof Laurie Boyer, finalist in MIT Future Founders Initiative, to develop value proposition and commercialization opportunities for high-resolution, high-throughput drug screening platform developed by her lab As a coach in your MBA admissions process, I would love to help you to find a unique way to highlight your prior experiences and skills in a way that makes sense to the adcoms. When I was deciding to do an MBA, I didn’t manage to find many resources about how a non-traditional, non-US candidate could get into top MBAs. Having gone through the process, I would love to use my expertise to help you achieve your MBA admission goal. I will be your partner in helping you discover your strengths and unique voice, cheering you on and motivating you while we work together on creating the best application packet. Given my background, I am particularly excited to work with international MBA applicants applying to US schools, who have non-traditional public policy backgrounds. As your management consulting case interview partner, I would love to help you hone your behavioral and case interview skills. I am actively involved with the MIT Sloan Management Consulting Club as part of the leadership team as well as a case interview pilot. I have conducted >60 cases for friends and juniors. People whom I have cased have told me that I am incisive at picking out key weaknesses in the case interview performance and giving rigorous and methodical advice on how to progress. I am also a superb cheerleader for my case interview mentees, because the case prep process is not just about honing hard skills but keeping a strong mindset!
